We often get questions about how to care for poodle ears. Here's a summary of our years of experience with those pesky poodle appendages:

  1. Get on a weekly schedule in tending to the ears. Pull hair once every three to four weeks; clean them out at least weekly, sometimes daily until they're cleaned up.
  2. Keep the hair out of the ear canals. You can use a good ear powder (we use Holiday) to make the hair brittle and easy to pull. Most of the long hairs can be pulled with your fingers, but to get the really deep hairs you'll need a pair of forceps, preferably with the latch filed off so you don't have to continually open them up again. Get those nasty deep dirty hairs.
  3. Once the hairs are out, treat the ears regularly with first Nolvasan Otic solution (to clean out dirt and wax, with cotton balls and Q-tips) and second apply Panalog antibiotic ointment. (An over-the-counter triple antibiotic cream from the drug store might work fine too.) Our thanks to our friend Dr. Mary Skog DVM for culturing her poodles' ears to discover the best treatment!
  4. Poodle ears get infected from being too hairy, NOT from mites--so don't be persuaded that Mitox will clean up a nasty ear.

Poodle ears are cureable! Even chronically bad ears can stay clean and healthy with diligent attention.
