Welcome...

...to my general course information page. You can reach the information about any of my courses by clicking on the course name in the list to the left.  Within each of the courses, there may be some course components, such as quizzes, which are password protected.  This information will be found within the "Web CT" link on the course page and is accessible only to those individuals enrolled in the course.

On this page and on each of the individual course pages, there is a link to the Course Forms site. This site contains the forms used in all the clinical courses of the Family Nurse Practitioner clinical sequence (Nursing 471, 473, 475, and 477). Completion of these forms is required for each of the clinical courses.

On each course page, there is also a link entitled "Announcements."  This link will include any announcements or other "new" information I need to communicate to my students...also any job posting I might hear about.  Please check this page frequently.

This page also contains the general policies which relate to all of the courses. It is important that you read this page carefully since it contains my policies about the theory and clinical portions of my courses. You are responsible for reading and complying with these policies. You will be able to return to this page to review course policies at any time from any of the course home pages.

COURSE SEQUENCING

Five of the courses in the family nurse practitioner sequence are considered "clinical" courses. These are 431, 471, 473, 475, and 477. These courses are to be taken in this sequential order and in consecutive academic terms. Thus, the student will take 431 in fall semester, 471 in spring semester, 473 in summer session, 475 in fall semester, and 477 in spring semester. Family Nurse Practitioner IV 477 is the synthesis course in which the student applies what has been learned in all of the other clinical courses.  [Return to Policy List]

CLASS ATTENDANCE

Students are expected to be present at all scheduled discussions and class sessions. Frequent or prolonged absences from scheduled classes and/or corequisite clinical course experiences may necessitate that the student drop the practicum sequence courses. All matters pertaining to student health and illness are to be referred to the course instructor or to the Director of the Graduate Program, if appropriate. A student wishing to drop a practicum sequence course must discuss the matter with the instructor, the academic advisor, or the Director of the Graduate Program.  [Return to Policy List]

LABORATORY/LIBRARY

The College laboratory and library facilities contain mediated and simulated learning environments used by the student in this course to achieve course objectives. Students may engage in learning activities on an individual basis or as a member of a group. Instructional materials in a variety of formats are available in the College laboratory and provide opportunities for learners to acquire, use, and test knowledge and skills. Some activities or media may be assigned by the instructor as part of the course requirements; other activities may be selected by the student for professional development and skills enhancement. Materials must be used within the College laboratory setting and are not available on a loan or check-out basis unless approved by laboratory or course staff/faculty. [Return to Policy List]

STATEMENT ON UNSAFE PRACTICE AND ATTAINMENT OF COURSE OBJECTIVES IN CLINICAL COURSES

A student may fail the clinical course on the basis of unsafe nursing care regardless of grades on course requirements or assignments. Unsafe nursing care shall be defined to include the following:
1. Failure to maintain confidentiality and/or ethical standards of nursing practice.
2. Failure to carry out nursing procedures in a safe manner.
3. Engaging in activities for which the student is not prepared.
4. Lying or deliberately giving inaccurate information.
5. Engaging in client care while a physical, mental, or emotional condition is a threat to others (e.g., communicable disease, intoxication, or emotional disorder).  [Return to Policy List]

CHEATING AND ETHICAL VIOLATIONS

Students who cheat or otherwise engage in significant ethical violations can expect me to pursue such matters to the full extent of my abilities, up to and including seeking expulsion from Illinois State University. Any work submitted with evidence of cheating or plagiarism will, at minimum, be given a grade of zero.  Talking during examinations will result, at minimum, in failure on that examination. Appropriate University guidelines will be followed regarding disciplinary action. For additional information concerning academic integrity, students may consult the Student Dispute Resolution Services web site. [Return to Policy List]

COMPUTER OUTAGES

At times the server may be down when it is time to complete an assignment. We can't control that. While server problems are not within your control, the way you handle them is. There is usually fair warning when university servers are going down. Students should make it a practice to investigate scheduled computer outages and anticipate failures with technology. Click here to find out about scheduled outages. Even if there is no advance indication of a problem, you are still responsible for due dates.  Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you use the college technological resources when they are up. Do not wait until the last minute to complete assignments!  [Return to Policy List]
