I received a B.A. in economics from St. Vincent College in 1966 and a Ph.D. in economics from Boston College in 1971. I started working at Illinois State University in 1971, where I was fortunate to have three careers. From 1971 to 1981, I served as an academic economist in the Department of Economics and was promoted to Full Professor in 1981. From 1981 to 1991, I served an administrative stint, first as the Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, then as Acting Associate Provost and Dean of Instruction in charge of academic planning and program review, and finally as Associate Vice President for Business and Finance where I coordinated the University's strategic planning efforts, authored an initial draft of a document that provided the basis for the University's decision to reduce enrollment by 3,000 students, and chaired a committee whose work resulted in a new telecommunications systems. In 1991, feeling the need to return to my roots and to the academic side of the University, I returned to my position in the Department of Economics. In May, 2002, I officially retired from my position in the Economics department. I am now Professor Emeritus of Economics. Life is good! My research interest lies primarily in the area of the economics of education. My research has appeared in the Journal of Economic Education, American Economic Review, Economic Inquiry, AAUP Bulletin, Educause Quarterly, and Economics of Education Review. In recognition of a lifetime of scholarship concerning teaching and learning, I received the Henry H. Villard Research Award, sponsored by the National Association of Economic Educators and the National Council on Economic Education, in 1999. Some recent publications:
