Spring 2001 Class

Geo201 - Physical Geography II

at Illinois State University

Our class last spring was a full dozen in number.  One of our activities was to develop web pages on various topics relating to physical geography. Each student developed his or her own topic.  Many of those original pages are now dead because the student graduated or left the University.  So, the only pages that have valid links are for students who are still active at Illinois State University, or in the case of Jenny we save her pages before she left the University.

The persons and their projects were:

Jenny on the forests of western North America

Scott on glaciers

Jim on volcanoes

Ryan on plate tectonics

Eric on groundwater

Fran on auroras

Rob on mapping vegetation and biomes

Jennifer on drought

Matt on rainforests

Chad on hurricanes and tornadoes

John on the New Madrid fault

Tallia on Earth / Sun relations

The purposes for doing this project are many. For the purpose of physical geography we want to make links to pages that teach and illustrate each of these topics. We are not creating new material in most cases but are trying to find what is already out there. In the process we are sorting through many pages to find the few pages worthy of note.

Many of these students are training to become teachers. As such learning to build their own pages is good training to become a teacher.

One important part of this exercise is to become aware of what it takes to make a web page. If students find they can make their own pages quite easily, it should give them an appreciation for the many pages made by others. It should also make them skeptical of some pages. Getting a page up on the web is not the same as having an article published in a peer-reviewed research journal.

Check out our pages and give us some feedback.
