The Map Use Commission of the International Cartographic Association   1995 - 1999

At the 1995 General Assembly of the International Cartographic Association in Barcelona the Map Use Commission was established, with Dr. James Carter, USA, Chair, and Dr. Milan Konecny, Czech Republic, Co-Chair.  In the previous four years this had been the Map and Spatial Data Use Commission under the same leadership.

In 1999 at the General Assembly of the ICA in Ottawa, I stepped down as Chair of the Commission.  Dr. Konecny was elected Vice President of the ICA.  The Commission was redefined as the Commission on Maps and the Internet under the direction of Dr. Michael Peterson, USA, and Dr. Georg Gartner, Austria.

Map Use continues as a emphasis both within the ICA and on my pages.  Follow these links to the many pages of the International Cartographic Association and the U.S. National Committee for the ICA.

My personal work on map use is built on what was developed through the activities of the Map Use Commission.

From 1995 through 1999 the Map Use Commission organized, participated in and published:

  • Joint Commission Seminar in Madrid on Teaching Animated Cartography, 1995, with papers published in a Proceedings
