              CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE

Promptness:

Class is in session from 6:55-7:45am.    The first few minutes of class will be for students to dress, and so forth.    Instruction will begin at 7am.    Excessive tardies will not be permitted.   I understand if you "over sleep" at this hour on occasion however any consistent problems with U-High students getting to class on time will be reported to the U-High administration.  Students from other schools will not be allowed to participate in the course if this is a consistent problem.

Attendance:

As this class is offered through University High School we observed and adhere to the Policy Handbook for UHS which states:  "Absence from ten (10) or more meetings of class during a given semester will result in loss of credit for that class unless a waiver is granted due to grave or exceedingly unusual circumstances."  While 10 absences sounds unheard of, it has happened.   Please be VERY careful if you should begin to miss class more than once each quarter.

Appropriate Dress:

  • Ladies should wear leotards & tights, biking shorts, or loose fitting pants (as appropriate to the dance form)
  • Men should wear T-shirts & tights, biking shorts, or loose fitting pants (as appropriate to the dance form)
  • IF NOT DRESSED APPROPRIATELY STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE AND THEIR GRADE WILL BE "DOCKED"
  • TEN POINTS EACH TIME THIS IS A PROBLEM...IF PROPER ATTIRE IS NOT RESPECTED
    (ie. jeans, street clothes, etc.)
  • BARE FEET FOR MODERN/BALLET SLIPPERS (PREFERRED) OR SOCKS FOR BALLET

  • "something comfortable you can move in" for IMPROVISATION

  • The studio can be cold in the winter months and sweatpants & legwarmers will be permitted on these occasions.

  • All long hair must be pulled back or worn up!!

  • Jewelry and body piercing is a safety issue and not permitted during class.

WARNING

I HAVE NO TOLERANCE FOR STUDENTS
ENROLLED IN THIS CLASS WITH NO INTENTION
OF LEARNING.   STUDENTS NOT DRESSED OR NOT PARTICIPATING
(FOR ANY REASON)
ON A CONSISTENT BASIS WILL BE REMOVED FROM CLASS!!!

Mutual Respect:

  • Talking or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. We practice MUTUAL respect in this class.
  • If you are ill and cannot make it to class, please come with a permit from your school or note from your parent the following day. This is an attendance rule at U-High and must be followed. If you cannot make class or need to leave early please speak with me before class. I will try to be understanding of your needs---but DO NOT take advantage of my good nature.
  • If I am ill or unable to make it to class due to weather or an emergency, I will make every effort to have the I.S.U. campus police post a sign or notify the class in some manner.   This is a difficult situation however as our class meets so very early.   I am rarely unable to make it to class however!
  • Most of your learning in this class will be through observation & listening. Some will be through self-discovery. In any case, concentration is the key. You are graded by the individual progress you make & the energy you put forth in the process. I expect all of your effort & energy each morning (even if it's early).  You will find, as I do, that our collective spirit brings a great deal to the class each morning!
  • Teacher feedback is primary in learning anything. In dance, I may offer you individual comment or comment intended for the whole group. In either case, comments should be taken as a sincere token of my admiration for you. Sometimes the comment will be a compliment---at other times, it will be a correction or suggestion for improvement. It is very important that you take that suggestion immediately and apply it to your work in class. Your grade depends upon this.
  • NO GUM CHEWING EVER EVER EVER! This is simply unacceptable in a formal class of any kind...and most especially in a dance class!
  • I will not tolerate excessive observation versus participation in class-if you must observe class, you must write a paper on the day's activities -due at the end of class or 10 points will be deducted from your total score each time you do not fully participate in class. If excessive non-participation becomes the norm, steps will be taken to dismiss you from continuing with the class for the grading period. This has become an issue in past years...I assure you that failing the quarter is the result!!

I am told I am difficult to get a hold of during the school year.
My home phone number is rarely used...ingoing or outgoing...
My Center for the Visual Arts number is my direct line & has voice mail on it.
My cell phone number is sometimes the only way to reach me!
I am also very responsive to email so don't hesitate to contact through email should you have a question or concern.
If you are unable to make it to class or to rehearsal for any reason
I expect the courtesy of a telephone call or email message well in advance if possible!
If we need to speak more at length throughout the semester,
it may be wise to set up an appointment. Just let me know.

Soon after the Orchesis Intercity Dance Company auditions, I will put together and distribute a company CONTACT SHEET which will include telephone numbers of all company members.
