            Textbook(s), Reading Materials, etc.    –    Gaither, Norman. Production and Operations Management, Dryden, 2002, 9th edition.

 

COURSE COMPETENCIES

 

Students should be able to:

1.      Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of the strategic role of the operations function in economic performance of any service or manufacturing organization.

2.      Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of quality management in the success of service and manufacturing organizations.

3.      Discuss the operations manager's responsibilities and major decision problems in service as well as manufacturing organizations.

4.      Demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationships between operations and other functional areas such as marketing and finance, and explain the impact of operations decisions on other functional areas.

5.      Discuss the global context in which operations decisions are made.

6.      Demonstrate an understanding of the application of computers and quantitative methods as tools to the operations decision making process.

7.      Apply and develop skills relating to problem solving, oral presentation, written presentation, and teamwork.

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Assignments/Homework:

You are requited to do the homework which will be assigned on a regular basis. HOMEWORK MUST BE TYPEWRITTEN.  Homework is due at the beginning of the class on the specified due date.  Late homework will NOT be accepted.  Homework should be neat.  All problems must be labeled.  The students’ typed name must be in the upper right-hand corner of the paper.  If more than one piece of paper is used, the papers must be stapled together (not paper clipped or bent).  Occasionally it could be easier for the student to show the answers typed on the first page of the homework, but this is only acceptable when ALL of the students pencil calculations are also attached with a staple.

If a student disagrees with the grading of any quizzes or homeworks, the student must submit their argument in detail in writing to the instructor by the next class period after receiving the quiz or homework.  The paper stating the students’ argument should be stapled on top of the document under discussion.

Material Coverage:

Students are responsible for the subjects covered in lectures, and all assigned textbook materials, even though they may not be completely covered in class. You are expected o bring your textbook and working calculator to class at all times.

            Final Group Presentations                      100 points

                                                                       560 – 620 points

Course Grade:

The course grade will be based on exam scores, homework, quizzes, and your final group presentations.

                        A         ≥  90% of Total Points

                        B          80-89% of Total Points

                        C         70-79% of Total Points

                        D         60-69% of Total Points

                        F          BELOW 60% of Total Points  

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Students are responsible for the subjects covered in lectures, and all assigned textbook materials, even though they may not be completely covered in class.  Unless pre-arranged, or for a very valid reason, absolutely no makeup exams will be allowed.
