I have conducted a number of research projects, including a study of rural crime and rural police, marijuana cultivation and the enforcement of marijuana laws, drug courts, venue change surveys, women who kill, the insanity defense, women in policing, jail inmates, alcohol/drug education, and juvenile justice. These projects have involved content analysis, focus groups, face-to-face interviewing, the reanalysis of existing data, telephone surveys and mail surveys. |

The address was titled "Why Rural Matters." 2002-present: Member of the Illinois Substance Abuse Monitoring Network, organized by the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority and the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse to facilitate the exchange of information and research related to drug abuse in Illinois. 1998: Provided a block of training on "The Rural Environment" to small town police chiefs and rural sheriffs in Maryland for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Community Policing Institute. October 1. 1998: Gave a presentation on the public health approach to drug policy to the annual meeting of the Justice Research and Statistics Association in San Diego, CA. Also ran two workshops on issues in rural violence. 1994: Provided technical assistance to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glencoe, GA. I took part in a curriculum conference to develop a course on rural drug enforcement. I also taught a two and one-half block titled "Rural Culture " for the pilot implementation of the curriculum. 1993: Organized a panel and gave a presentation on crime and policing in small rural communities for the International Association of Chiefs of Police meeting in St. Louis, MO. 1993: Gave an invited presentation on community policing in rural areas at a conference "Community Policing for Safe Neighborhoods" sponsored by the National Institute of Justice. 1993: Gave an invited presentation on drugs in rural areas at a conference "Evaluating Crime and Drug Control Strategies" sponsored by the National Institute of Justice and the Bureau of Justice Assistance. 1993: Served as a technical reviewer of grants for the National Institute of Justice. 1993: Organized a roundtable and gave a presentation entitled "Rural Crime and Rural Policing" for the Annual Meeting of the National Sheriff's Association in Salt Lake City, Utah. This workshop was videotaped and shown in two one-hour segments on the LETN (Law Enforcement Training Network), a sattelite service available to police department around the country. LETN programming provides information and training specifically aimed at police departments. 1991: Participated in a videotaped discussion of drugs and crime as part of the "Crime and Justice Series" of films sponsored by Eastern Kentucky University, which are designed for classroom and training purposes. 1990: Invited panel member at conference on "Police and Community Responses to Drugs" organized by the University of Illinois-Chicago. (Panel: The Drug War: Are We Winning or Losing?). 1989: Organized Spring Conference sponsored by the Department of Criminal Justice at Illinois State University. (Topic: Racism and the Criminal Justice System). 1987: Conducted a workshop on "What is a Needs Assessment?" for the Illinois Association of Police Planners. 1987: Conducted a workshop on "The Process of Publishing" for faculty in the College of Applied Science and Technology at Illinois State University. 1986-1988: Member of the McLean County Jail Review Committee which monitors jail conditions and makes policy recommendations. 1984-1986: Member of the John Howard Association, a prison reform association which visits prisons and monitors conditions there. 1986: Conducted a workshop on "Women and Crime" for the Illinois Council on Family Relations. 1986: Organized a Spring Conference sponsored by the Department of Criminal Justice at Illinois State University.
