Sara Semonis, Head of the Dance Area and Artistic Director of Illinois State Dance Theartre, holds an MFA in Dance from the University of Iowa and a BA from Western Illinois University.  She has been on faculty at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 2000-2003 and at Knox College as the Director of Dance from 1995-1997.  She is a former member of Dancers In Company and has performed in works by David Parsons, Doug Nielsen, Timothy O’Slynn, Brenda Bufalino, Laurie Eisenhower, Kim Nofsinger, and others.  Sara’s choreography has been recognized and selected for Gala Performance at American College Dance Festivals in 2009, 2007, 2002, 1999 and 1997.  In 1999, she was the recipient of the Choreography Award at the National Choreography Conference for Regional Dance America.  Sara has created over 40 original works that have been performed throughout the U.S.  and held residencies/master classes at Friends University, Middle Tennessee State University, University of Iowa, Interlochen Center for Arts, Ball State,  Contemporary Dance Omaha, Black Hills Dance Theatre, Canton Ballet, Victoria Ballet Theatre, Western Illinois University and Grinnell College.  She has performed with Charlotte Adams and Dancers at the Joyce SoHo in New York, and the David Berkey Retrospective Concert in Iowa City, and has been a member of Shelter Repertory Dance Theatre since 2003 performing at numerous locations throughout the midwest.  Most recently, Sara was awarded the Outstanding Research Initiative Award and the Outstanding Service Award for the College of Fine Arts at Illinois State University.  She is a current National Board member of the American College Dance Festival Association and continues her work as a free-lance, choreographer, teacher, performer, and Pilates instructor.
